Hi… my name is Jessica… and I am the author of Wild About Firsties (in case you forgot who writes on this little neglected blog)
Y’all, I really tell myself that I am going to blog all.the.time….. but I get home (and y’all know how teacher tired feels towards the end of the year) and I just eat and plop down on the couch (or do dishes and laundry… cause we know that never ends!)
So…. I am finally sitting down to write a little bit about what has been going on in our classroom the past few weeks!

These past few weeks we have been measuring our little hearts out! Our Math standards have changed this year so we ONLY focus on length. For 12 days. With non-standard units. It’s a long few weeks!
We started of with the basics…. just identifying the longer object within a set. We sorted some picture cards and the students had to order them from long, longer, and longest.
And I don’t know about your little babies…. but mine LOVE interactive journals this year! I try to incorporate interactive printables in my centers, independent work, and activities.
This simple activity just had my babies ordering pictures just like their sorting cards:
We read this fun and creepy book too (which my kiddos are STILL talking about!)
After identifying which objects were the longest or shortest, it was time to introduce actual measuring.
I have come to find that if you include food with your lessons and activities, success is guaranteed! (Well, at least it seems like it!)
We had so much fun with our SWEET measurement….. All I did was place M&M’s on plates along with their measurement cards (you can easily use skittles or fruit loops cereal if you don’t want to do candy!)
I set it up like stations around the room and paired my students up in groups of 2.

Students just carry their recording sheet with them around the room and away they go!
They absolutely LOVED this activity!!!
Since we were starting to get the hang of this “measuring” thing…. it was time to go on a little Measurement Hunt!
My babies had to look for items of various lengths and record them. Some got pretty creative with what they began to measure!
Yes, we even measured words on the board!
Next up…. we had to learn how to “estimate”! We were getting pretty good at exact measurements, but learning to estimate was just as important.
I set up a little measuring station that included various non-standard units and they had to estimate the length and measure 5 different objects.
Excuse the random piece of blue tape (it is my question line for when I do my guided reading groups and don’t want to get interrupted… they stand at the line and wait for my signal).

With twelve days of measuring only length with non-standard units, we were coming up with as many activities as we could to keep our friends engaged and learning!
The weather last week was absolutely B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L!!! Like 80+ degrees. My kids were even telling me they were having heat stroke. (Do they not remember summer in Texas. My sweet children are going to melt in July!)
Anyways…. we had a Measure Me day (students could measure themselves, a friend, and yes, even their teacher!)
But with the weather so nice….. it was time to take our cubes and ourselves outside!
Almost at the end of our measurement unit…
Today we had small groups set up in the classroom with our “Tape it Up” activity.
I placed 5 different length pieces of tape around the room and labeled them Tape A – Tape E.
Students used cubes again today to measure these pieces of tape.
We are just about done with measurement! We have two more days and we are off to addition and subtraction!

Yesterday was Cinco de Mayo and we sure had a little fiesta in our room! Any excuse for some chips and salsa…. I’m in!
We learned some fun facts, of course we completed some more interactive fun pages and writing and then we celebrated with chips and salsa!!! Yum. Yum. Yum!

I don’t know about y’all but we have 21 days left of school and I know it’s going to be a small battle each day with end-of-year behavior and summer struggles!
We will definitely be throwing in some fun and hands-on activities to get us through these last few weeks!

Wow…. so this post is kinda all over the place. I guess that is what happens when you go M.I.A. for a month!
This past weekend the hubby and I took the boys to their very first Texas Rangers baseball game. We love going to the games but we have yet to take the littles with us. I was for sure that little M would be DONE by the first pitch, but to my surprise we lasted the ENTIRE game (and it went extra innings!)
(Yes, I know…. little M needs a haircut. soon.)
Towards the end of the game…. Jaxon was getting bored (and hungry) and after spending an arm, leg, and probably another vital organ on food while we were there…. he wasn’t happy. He was HANGRY.
So the guy in front of us turns around and hands Jaxon this HUGE beautiful championship ring. Long story short, the guy is the dad to one of the Ranger’s staff and this was the 2011 Championship ring for the Rangers!
